Public openSUSE 11.3 virtual machine
I really like our openSUSE Community. Do you remember that before 11.2 release there was a possibility to try new openSUSE without installing it? Well, our community member Jaromír Červenka did it again! Original blogpost in Czech can be found here. For those who don't speak Czech, some basic overview in English.
Once upon the time, there was a virtual machine. It was using KVM and it was managed by gentle libvirt. But it was kind of lonely. But as it was young and fresh new openSUSE, it wanted to see more people. So Červajz made a passage for it through the firewall. And now it runs ssh, vnc and even web service and it can talk to everybody.
So end of fairy tales. You can access latest openSUSE Milestone using following informations:
| login: | password: |
| virtual | virtual |
| root | virtual |
| Connection posibilities |
| vncviewer leon.i-tux.cz:5901 |
| ssh -l virtual leon.i-tux.cz -p2222 |
And last thing to mention - there is already fate request to creating something like this officially. So if you like this, vote for it ![]()
YaST on mobile phone
Linux can run almost everywhere. For some time I was participating in Hacking & Development project, but lately I didn't have enough time to keep up. But today I went to the SleepWalker's office to take a look at his new Zaurus (NetWalker) and he gave me kernel that can run on my Centro. I tried it and I was thinking what rootfs should I try... I have in my longterm todo to try openSUSE ARM port which is a result of Google Summer of Code project. So why not? I tried it and here are the results - YaST running on mobile phone.
I didn't have a time to solve all minor glitches as you can see on second picture, but when I'll have some time, I'll give it a try ![]()
Updates in unstable repo (not only) for openSUSE
I already mentioned this repository several times on my blog. It is the repository where I'm trying to keep bleeding edge stuff for MySQL. I've been updating it recently and we've got new package there and some interesting updates I want to mention.
MariaDB and MySQL
First thing to mention is that this repository contains MariaDB builds. MariaDB is fork of MySQL and their goals are certainly interesting. For list of differences, try upstream page. As I consider it interesting, I'm keeping eye on it
Maybe our users may benefit from it. But currently it is also a source of possible problems in this repository as it contains MySQL as well. I tried to modify both packages in such a manner that both provide mysql and conflict with each other. It should be possible for user to decide which "mysql" he wants. But as I'm still trying to test it and improve it, it may still contain some glitches. But I pushed it here, so you can try it and help to make it perfect. Currently available versions in this repository are MariaDB version 5.1.41 and MySQL version 5.5.1. You can decide which one do you want to try by installing either 'mariadb' package or 'sun-mysql' package. If you encounter any problems, please let me know. And as always, backup while you still have something to backup ![]()
MySQL Workbench
Other thing that was updated is MySQL Workbench which is now available in this repository in version 5.2.14. Again, even Sun considers this version beta, so be cautious. But I really like it. It combines together previous Workbench and Administrator (I think even Query tool, but I didn't used that one too much). It has nice and shiny GUI and it definitely worths trying. It is a huge difference against version present in openSUSE 11.2 not mentioning older releases. But I'm keeping here 5.2 branch of MySQL Workbench for some time already so maybe you already noticed ![]()
Other builds
Maybe you also noticed, that MySQL is getting build in our Build Service not only for various SUSE distribution but also for RedHat, Fedora and CentOS. Same applies in server
atabase:UNSTABLE repository and therefore not only MySQL but also MariaDB is getting build here for these distribution. Lately I tried to figure out dependencies for MySQL Workbench and I succeeded in building that for Fedora too (It would be too difficult to support RedHat or CentOS). That's great thing about openSUSE Build Service. It encourages you to build your packages even for non-SUSE people. But as I don't have these distributions anywhere, these builds are even less tested then SUSE ones. But if you want to try them and report errors you encounter, feel free to do so ![]()
Link
Last thing to mention is URL where you can find everything I wrote about in this post. And here it is, just choose your distribution ![]()

Media Wiki Theme - status update
Last time I informed you about Media Wiki theme I've been working on for our Umbrella project. There were plenty of reactions to the screenshot. I'll skip the positive feedback and let's talk about the negative one. Most of the negative feedback was about the color. Some people didn't liked that it is grey and not green. Robert responded to this and instead of citing him, you can read his whole reaction here. In short, grey has some advantages against green (high contrast, elegant, neutral, ...) and we can use green elsewhere and for highlighting.
There were some other suggestions as well. So I rewrote some parts of the theme. You can see new screenshot above. But today it's not only about the screenshot. I also deployed this theme and sample Media Wiki on my web, so you can try clicking through it
If you have any suggestions/complains, don't hesitate to speak up. And if you'll attach the patch it will be even nicer
That reminds me of the code. All webdesign code is available in opensuse-webdesign repository on gitorius. So you can browse trough it if you are interested and of course, send a patch ![]()
Status Report - Media Wiki Theme
As you may or may not know, I'm part of the openSUSE Boosters team and I'm working on umbrella project. Part of this project is to make all openSUSE pages look similar. What I was working on during last week was to addapt Roberts Bentoo theme for Media Wiki. And as I posted to my workreport that it is available internaly (as it is curently running on my machine only) I'm posting here sample screenshot ![]()
