As you probably all know, few weeks ago was openSUSE Conference 2010. And it was great event and I’m glad I was able to attend it. Unfortunatelly I had some troubles with my blog, so I’m writing about it now. I had there a small “workshop” about KVM & libvirtd and about why you shouldn’t be affraid of using them. Few slides that I came up with can be obtained here, but most of the time, it consisted from the discussion with people that attended it. But I want to write mainly about interesting things that I learned on conference.

You maybe already noticed, that MariaDB folks released their new stable version 5.2.3 today. And as we’ve got our great openSUSE Build Service, we already have this version packaged and you can install it easilly on openSUSE. I didn’t had much time to test it deeply, I just tried that it runs, and that I’m able to connect to it, so it is currently in server:database:UNSTABLE repository, but after some testing, it will proceed futher 😉 If you want to try it, make sure to backup your data first! So talks on openSUSE you can use one click install to get MariaDB 5.2.3. For others, you can just use one of the following repositories:

You probably already heard about that. Some time ago, Luboš created really great tool – kde-obs-generator. This tool takes a simple config and analyze tarball with sources. Then it will try to create spec file, dsc file and everything you need to build package from that. Easy to use even for non-packagers 😉

One little potential inconvinience with kde-obs-generator was that it depended on one KDE core library. Not really problem in openSUSE, just one little library to install, but it might be more complicated elsewhere. On other distributions dependency on this one KDE library might be non-trivial and pull in quite some KDE components. And some folks might dislike it even because something not so practical. I can imagine that it may sound quite funny packaging Gnome application with KDE application 😀 So with some poking (and little help) from our side, Luboš dropped the dependency on KDE libraries and now it depends only on Qt.

You probably already know from Pavols post, that we are going to work openSUSE Connect during Froscon. Anybody can join us. Only basic php knowledge and will to learn new things is required. Or maybe you can contribute somehow even without php, just with html and css. Anyway, what I was investigating lately was the Karma concept in new openSUSE Connect. We want some Karma. We want it to collect some karma point from all different aspect of openSUSE Contribution. So this post is about one little bit crazy idea that came to my mind. It’s going to be about Connect and Karma and I’m NOT promising that any of this will come to the existence.

Last Friday, we had a openSUSE 11.3 Launch party at Prague. Why so late? Why not right after the release? Well, it takes some time to organize things but the main reason was that we wanted to have official promo media so we wouldn’t need to give away home burned ones as last. Home burned were made with love, but manufactured ones looks better 😉 So what we did? We had some talks, gave away some DVDs, ate some Pizza, talk about openSUSE, give our visitors tour through the SUSE Offices in Prague and moved to the pub to continue talking about openSUSE.

So some other things happened with openSUSE Paste so I want to inform you about the current situation. We have http://susepaste.org address, right? So from yesterday, we also have http://paste.opensuse.org. Same computer, same IP, just different name if you prefer the other one. As it is the same thing as susepaste.org, links are interchangeable. So you can post something to susepaste.org and send link to paste.opensuse.org or vise versa. Just replace the first part of the url 😉

It’s been some time since I started working on openSUSE pastebin clone with Bento theme. I had some other duties so it took some time to find some final resting place for that. Some of you asked me for a better URL. I finally found it and since today SUSE Paste is running again on new address and it is ready to serve you 😉 I also wrote a simple script to make it easier to use it. So you can start using it, promoting openSUSE and if you encounter any problems, don’t hesitate to report them.
